Summary on Grant Application Form
The available information on dynamic crowd loading is limited, and the information available is contradictory. It is evident that more definitive information is required to inform the design and use of stadia. We propose to measure the vertical force and height signatures of people moving to a beat they do to music at rock (pop) concerts and at sporting events. Each force history will be of one person jumping or'bobbing' (moving up and d the feet always in contact with the ground) to a loud uniform beat continuously for a period of about 30 seconds. Force histories will be collect( sufficient number of people for the combined loading of a crowd jumping to the same beat to be calculated. The measurements will be repeated range of beat frequencies, within the range of 1.67 to 3.33 Hz. The results of the research will be the clearest possible description of crowd-inc vertical loading that might occur at rock concerts and sporting events, suitable both for assessing exisiting recommendations for design loadin informing new requirements.
