Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) holds great potential promise for a variety of magnetic device applications including non-volatile MRAM, hybrid spintronic devices, and in hard drive read head sensor elements. However, it is a complex perovksite, with mixed valence cation and only a narrow window of phase stability. Bulk and thin film materials made so far, fall short of the theoretically predicted saturation magnetisation value because of the lack of control over the materials chemistry. The magneto-resistance due to grain boundary transport is also disappointingly low and the key parameter, spin polarisation is rarely determined.In preliminary studies we have already demonstrated that the novel USP technique yields epitaxial films. The technique is attractive because it offers the potential for good control over materials chemistry. In this proposal we aim to develop the USP technique, to produce doped and undoped films in order to understand the relationship between magnetic oder and spin polarisation. In addition grain boundaries will be produced on single crystal and polycrystal substrates and in isolated grain boundary structures, so that the key factors that determine the magnetoresistance can be identified and controlled. This latter work will benefit from various additional strengths that we have developed within the group to control grain boundary properties in oxides.
