Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work will address open problems in the theory and analysis of near-surface wave propagation in thin-film/substrate systems. Typically the surface film consists of a very thin layer of metal bonded either to a metallic or ceramic substrate, but a number of alternatives specific to geomechanics may also be envisaged. Specifically, the aim is to develop and apply a model incorporating explicit material symmetries for a twodimensional film interacting with a three-dimensional substrate material which also accounts for the effects of residual stresses and couples and for the possibility of substrate pre-strain. Particular attention will be given to the energy flux across the film/substrate interface in the presence of residual stress as this is expected to influence the fracture resistance of such systems.
