Summary on Grant Application Form |
The kinetics of adsorption of surfactants at the solid-liquid interface is challenging to study for two reasons. First, sensitive techniques are needed to monitor adsorption of sub-monolayer amounts of surfactant in real time. Second, the kinetic processes at the interface are convoluted with mass transport in the bulk. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we have used a channel flow cell to control precisely the hydrodynamics, and ellipsometry to follow the adsorption process with a time resolution of 0.1s. W e propose to develop this methodology and incorporate other detection techniques, such as infrared absorption spectroscopy or Raman scattering, that have chemical sensitivity. With the use of finite difference simulations, we will develop quantitative models for the kinetics of adsorption of surfactants on a silica surface. The methodology will be extended to the difficult problem of adsorption on the surfaces of organic crystals with the goal of understanding how the surface functionality of organic crystals affects the kinetics (and thermodynamics) of surfactant adsorption.
