This research aims to develop a new strategy to (3-substituted alcohols based on the concept of the direct carbo-hydroxylation of alkenes. In the first instance we intend to investigate the Pd(0) catalysed Heck type additions of o-iodophenyldimethyl silanol to alkenes and dienes. It is anticipated that the intermediate carbometallation product will form a palladium heterocycle before (3-hydride elimination can proceed. This species should then undergo reductive elimination to form a S-O based heterocycle which upon protodesilylation on workup will afford the (3-substituted alcohol. This methodology could offer an alternative to the more usual sequence of alkene epoxidation followed by ring opening with a carbon nucleophile. Possibilities to tune the mechanism in favour of our goal will exist by suitable modification of ligands and use of appropriate additives. If successful this methodology will be adapted to cover the carbo-amination of alkenes.
