Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Platform Grant programme provides core support for the development of the Aston Photonics Research Group major activities in optical communications and all-optical networks, in photonic devices and fabrication technology, in sensor techniques and in signal processing. Four key strands are identified. The first concentrates on developing new planar device fabrication techniques using laser inscription processes; a range of key photonic materials are addressed with the aim of establishing fundamental mechanisms and establishing feasibility constraints. The second major activity resides in the consolidated approach to a range of new fibre sensor techniques primarily for applications in the medical and smart structural fields. Two further components of the programme address advanced theory/modelling of optical communications systems, and the experimental development of high-speed communication systems and all-optical networks. An integrated approach is adopted throughout, such that the separate strands are inter-related to maximise cross-utilisation of techniques and exploitation of the technology. The programme is conceived to provide continuity for key individuals and research areas, to build upon novel results already obtained, and to establish important elements of feasibility, as essential precursors to the development of a range of subsequent application-specific proposals.
