The increasing availability of remotely sensed data (RSD) from airborne instruments, advances in probabilistic and other uncertainty handling methods and developments in software modularisation techniques present a significant opportunity to improve computer models for predicting flood inundation. This proposal seeks funding for a multi-disciplinary expert group to review the use of remotely sensed data, uncertainty handling and software modularisation in such models. There will be two aspects to the review, an evaluation of best practice in existing software, and, the development of a technical specification for the next generation of computer models for predicting flood inundation. The applicants believe that investment in these areas is essential if the UK is to, not only manage flood risk more effectively at a national level, but also retain its position as a major exporter of flood modelling expertise.Development of better inundation prediction models capable of integration with remotely sensed data has been identified as an area of high priority research by the EPSRC Network on Conveyance in River Floodplain Systems (Network meeting notes 3 September 2001) and is also a key objective of the joint EA/DEFRA National Strategy for Flooding Research, which aims to co-ordinate Government, University and Industry Research and Development in this area.
