The work forms part of a Joint Project on Transient Multiphase Flow (TMF3) as described in the Case for Support. It is proposed that work should be carried out in Imperial College (Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology) on three of the Sub-Projects. In Sub-Project II (Slug Tracking) the aim is to develop practical methods for pipeline flow predictions using the slug tracking approach. The analytical work will begin with derivation of the basic formulation ensuring that momentum and mass are properly conserved. New models would be developed for slug initiation. A computer code would be written to predict slug flows in straight and deviated pipes and this code validated against data ontained in the Imperial College WASP high pressure multi[phase flow facilty. This facility and an associated low pressure facility would be used for visualisation and and local parameter measurements in the initiation region to provide a basis for the development and validation of the initiation model. In Sub-Project IV (Thermal Management), work would be carried out on experiments and on one-dimensional modelling of pipeline ) including partially buried pipelne) and manifold thermal performance. Management of the temperature distribution in these systems is vital in preventing blockage by solids (e.g.hydrates and wax). In Sub-Project V (ThreePhase Flow), the emphasis will be on the generation of new data on phase distribution in three phase flows again using the WASP facility(taking advantage of the new X-ray tomography system).
