Summary on Grant Application Form |
Unsteady aerodynamics directly affects the performance and safety of aircraft, but inability to predict these complex phenomena has led to performance and cost penalties in the past. Recent advances in computing and methods have opened the opportunity of better prediction and simulation, and PUMA was formed in 1999 partly to exploit this opportunity. This proposal addresses non-linear aeroelastics for fixed wing aircraft and advanced methods (LES and RANS) for predicting Hot Gas Ingestion and mainstream-secondary leakage in engines. The philosophy of this programme is to demonstrate methods/tools on cases of practical industrial relevance. The deliverables will be applicable to current civil and military aircraft (improvements in cost effective qualification), JSF (STOVL characteristics and aeroelastic prediction) and UCAVs (non-linear aeroelastics behaviour).
