Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal seeks a small amount of funding for a visiting fellow to realise an adventurous project in the area of interaction design. The proposal addresses the problem of providing a conceptual foundation for theorizing user experience of interactive technology. This problem emerges from the growing interest in people's experiences with a variety of technologies, especially those smart, ubiquitous, and mobile devices that are becoming part of our lives, not just tools for our work. As we need to be able to live with these technologies, not just use them, the focus for design and evaluation has to move beyond usability to user experience. Although there is a growing recognition of the salience of user experience in interaction design, there have been few sustained attempts to conceptualise technology in terms of experience. Our foundation will draw together Dewey's aesthetic (1925, 1934) and Bakhtin's (1993) dialogical account of experience, as well as theories from film and media studies (e.g. Boorstin 1995). Having developed a theoretical foundation for conceptualising experience we will go on to develop a framework for analysing user experience of technology. This will be done by applying the framework to existing technology case study data. There will then be a number of dissemination activities including international tutorials or workshops.
