Summary on Grant Application Form |
1.We will study commutative radical Banach algebras, an important research topic whose importance is described below. Prof. Read and Dr. Willis have a good joint paper in this area already and another in preparation.2.We will study certain problems in the theory of algebras on locally compact groups, to which Dr. Willis has made very significant contributions; this is likely to be a topic of collaboration between Prof. Dales and Dr. Willis; the problems they want to tackle are further described by Prof. Dales in our case for support.3.We will study problems concerning the amenability of Banach and operator algebras. It was Dr. Willis who first showed that an amenable, singly generated operator algerbra must be similar to a C'-algebra; this led to further results (e.g. if an amenable operator algebra consists entirely of compact operators, once again it must be similar to a C -algebra), and we would like to know if any amenable operator algebra can ever fail to be similar to a C'-algebra.4.Specific to topic 1 above is the recent result of Willis and Read that completely characterises the ideals of the LRRW algebras; it is unusual to be able to do this in a nontrivial case, and we intend to follow up this specific, rather exciting result.
