Summary on Grant Application Form
The collaboration which is known as CARUCCI (Collaborative Virtual Environments, Augmented Reality and Ubiquitous Computing for Critical Interventions) aims to investigate and develop a Virtual Environment model for simulation, training and guidance of critical operations/interventions. Such interventions may be in different professional areas but all having the following common problems: the inability of training on the job due to unjustifiable high costs or risk and poor to insufficient sensory feedback during the actual interventions. A critical intervention can be defined as an intervention which involves a certain risk to the operator, a subject or an entire society when executed but also a comparable or even greater risk if not executed. Examples are surgery, operating and maintenance of machinery, installations or entire plants, driving and/or manipulation of (non-standard) vehicles, vessels, submarines and aircraft, and execution of scientific experiments.
