This proposal builds on the Dynamic Brain Atlas grid demonstrator, which showed how distributed computing coupled with grid protocols could provide decision support in diagnosis of brain images. This demonstrator was very thought provoking, and has raised many research questions which we seek to address in this proposal. Firstly, we wish to assess how well the grid enables this application to scale to use more distributed data and computing, larger numbers of more diverse images, and more computationally intensive algorithms. Secondly, encouraged by the capability of the grid, we wish to extend the functionality to time varying data, and data from outside the brain. To emphasise this generic capabilitiy, we have named the proposal Information eXtraction from Images (IXI). Thirdly, we wish to build an application interface to IXI, enabling ourselves, and other e-science researchers, to build applications using this technology. We will work in particular on two exemplars: decision support in healthcare (with Philips Medical Systems) and analysis of images obtained in drug discovery (with GSK). We will work closesly with other UK grid researchers to couple our application with their infrastructure and middlware expertise.
