Proton-Sponge, 1,8-bis(dimethylamino)naphthalene, will be derivatised with a variety of functional groups suitable as ligands, such as -PR2, -NC, - Cp, etc. The high basicity of the proton sponge will render the ligands amenable to study by electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), but the low nitrogen nucleophilicity of the sterically congested dimethylamino groups will prevent the ligand coordinating to metals except through the intended functionality. Additionally, the presence of the proton sponge will confer pH-dependent, reversible water solubility on the ligand (and hence the complex). The ease of analysis by ESI-MS will allow the characterisation of metal complexes under reaction conditions, directly in the solvent(s) used and in the presence of large proportions of substrate. As such, this approach will be ideal for the investigation of catalytic reactions involving metal complexes. Furthermore, tandem mass spectrometric techniques will allow reaction of the complexes (and related unsaturated species generated by ligand stripping) in the gas phase with the original substrates and with libraries of related molecules in a combinatorial fashion.
