Summary on Grant Application Form
In cavity QED the atom and cavity field are strongly coupled, so strong, that this effect dominates all others and for the duration of the interaction the system becomes an ideal, dissipation free quantum system. This effect is strongest in the microwave regime. The aim of the current project is to construct a one atom maser to investigate the possibility of creating long chains of entangled atoms. This follows a recent experiment by my group in which large ensembles of atoms were created exhiting correlations between all atoms of the ensemble. The one atom maser will be constructed to investigate this effect further and determine if these atoms are entangled. Once consturcted however the one atom maser will becoe the central of a broader experimental investigation into cavity QED and quantum information.
