Summary on Grant Application Form |
A programme of research aimed at understanding exciton and carrier dephasing as well as spin relaxation in InGaN/GaN quantum wells is proposed. Femtosecond photon echo spectroscopy will be used to explore exciton and carrier phase coherence at a variety of optical densities up to the stimulated emission regime where carrier-carrier scattering becomes significant. Using a circularly polarised pump and probe technique, spin relaxation will be investigated to determine the predominant decay processes. Despite the fact that this project deals with fundamental physical phenomena there are considerable implications for device development, in particular the advancement of visible to UV photodetectors and lasers based around wide gap nitrides. In order to implement these investigations a decidated and permanent experimental rig is to be established in order to pursue deep blue / UV, photon echo and pump-probe experi ments utilising the necessary combinations of linear and circularly polarised femtosecond light pulses provided by a regeneratively amplified 130 fs Ti-Sapphire laser.
