Summary on Grant Application Form |
Previously, we have shown that nanoporous organic materials, with surface areas up to 1000 m2 /g, can be prepared by creating a network of phthalocyanines linked by a rigid spirocyclic scaffold. Based on an exciting preliminary result involving the preparation of porphyrin-based networks, it is anticipated that a general route to bespoke nanoporous organic materials can be based on the efficient formation of the rigid dibenzodioxane linking group. The nanoporous polymer networks will be prepared from a wide range of precursors so that desired combinations of functionality, acidity, hydrophobicity and porosity are customised to suit their intended application. Important structure -property relationships will be determined so that materials with the appropriate behaviour can be designed. These materials may act as well-defined, selective and efficient alternatives to activated carbon as adsorbants and can incorporate functionality for heterogeneous catalysis. We request funding for a named student to work in tandem with the PDRA funded by GR/R8974, and for a surface analyser which is essential for the rapid and detailed assessment of the many samples that this team will produce.
