The inefficiencies of mineral ore comminution are well established. This has meant significant mounts of research effort have been emended into reducing energy consumption. One such method has been the use of microwave heating to induce thermal stresses and failure within ore samples. A previous EPSRC International Collaboration project had the aim of investigating the influence of microwave cavity type on the economics of microwave assisted comminution. It was found that reductions in ore strength were intimately related to the applied electric field strength (or power density). For several materials spectacular results were achieved with significant reductions in ore strength being achieved in microwave cavity residence times of less than 0.1 seconds and specific microwave energy inputs of less than 1 kWht -1. The deliverables from the project will be 1. Data concerning the integration of electromagnetic and ghanical numerical simulation codes 2. Data comparing different types of dielectric property measurement apparatus. 3. Initial cavity designs for energy efficient microwave treatment of minerals 4. A workshop that will enable wide dissemination of the results 5. Refereed journal articles.
