Summary on Grant Application Form
The project addresses the problem of quantifying and localising bursts in a water network. This will be acheived through a variety of methods such as analysis of pressure and flow measurements and the relationship between these, statistical determination of demand, background leakage and advanced modelling. It is envisaged that the principal outcome will be a tool that, from a few simple measurements, can determine the amount of water lost through bursts and provide a firm indication of where this water is being lost. This tool will be in the form of software that can be incorporated into existing network analysis packages. The The benefits of the project will be increased operational efficiency for the water industry leading to reduction of water losses, energy consumption and cost of burst location practices. Other benefits will have a social effect, in particular improved water quality, less disruption to consumers and the general public, assist water companies in achieving targets set out by OFWAT, DWI and the EA.
