Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research project will investigate scaling effects in fibre-metal laminates including a new self-reinforced polypropylene FML that has been shown to offer an outstanding resistance to both low and high velocity impact loading. Initially, attention will focus on elucidating the scaling characteristics of the tensile strength of ply-scaled FMLs. Particular attention will be given to identifying size effects in the failure mechanisms and fracture processes. These tests will then be repeated at dynamic rates of strain and the Cowper-Symonds relationship will be used to characterise the strain-rate sensitivity of these systems. Scaling effects in the impact response of FMLs will be investigated by conducting low velocity impact tests on a series of scaled beams and plates. Here, the Buckingham pi theory will be applied and parameters such as the impact duration, maximum impact force and absorbed energy will be used to characterise scaling effects in these multi-layered systems. Finally, a detailed investigation into scaling effects in the impact failure modes will be undertaken. Here, any transitions in failure modes in passing from small-scale coupons to the full-scale prototype will be identified using appropriate damage-detection techniques.
