Panel History:
Summary on Grant Application Form
The research project at the University of Oxford will develop and characterise a capacitor based on a novel dielectric system, based on the dispersion of nano-scale ceramic particles, with high dielectric constant, in a high performance polymeric matrix, to combine the high voltage capability of polymer film based devices with the compact nature of ceramic capacitorsThe principle innovation in the proposed work is the use of novel polymer/ceramic hybrid technology in capacitor applications. High permittivity metaloxide materials will compose the primary dielectric. These ceramics will be nano-sized to increase their specific surface area, thus enhancing their effective permittivity. Polymers that are capable of providing adequate voltage and temperature capability, which are compatible with the ceramic materials, will be investigated, and a ceramic/polymer system down-selected for demonstration. Processing of the ceramic/polymer blend will be a key selection parameter. Finite element modelling-work, initially using properties inferred from the literature, and later from measurements on actual dielectric will be used to design basic capacitor element (electrode/dielectric/electrode). The use of predictive lifing models and stress analysis will enable future commercial components to be designed with benign failure modes, enhancing safety.
