Summary on Grant Application Form
Fibre reinforced titanium metal matrix composites (TiMMCs) are under development for major rotating components in the fans and compressors of future aeroengines. Fan technology dirvers are weight reductions couple to reliable life prediction. In view of their relatively low temperatures of operation (< 300C) fan rotors can utilise existing TiMMCs based on a Ti-6A-4V matrix and reinforced with coated silicon carbide fibres which are available commercially. However, to extend TiMMCs further back into HP compressors requires the development of higher temperature TiMMC components. This programme addresses both fundamental lifing issues for Ti-6AI-4V composites and the extension of the technology to allow higher temperature applications. The areas of technology development specifically supported by this programme are: lifing methodologies, and new material and fibre combinations for TiMMC components.
