Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research project will conduct a detailed investigation into efficiency improvements in millimetre wave monolithic pHEMT based power ampliff addition to the traditional Class A, B and AB designs, novel Class F topologies will be considered for use in the frequency range 18 to 94 GHz. Th impact of bias arrangements and non-linear behaviour of the active device will be investigated in detail. A key aspect of the circuit design will focu particular on generating the optimum passive matching networks. These will be designed to simultaneously maximize power output and efficiency a given bandwidth. A key aspect of this design technique will be the appropriate termination of harmonics up to and including the fifth, thus enabli correct voltage and current waveforms to minimise power dissipation in the active device. Accurate design will be possible by combining these de with a fully physical device model, which will allow the highly non-linear operation of the device to be accurately portrayed and directly related to tt fabrication process. The theoretical work will be demonstrated with the design, fabrication and test of high efficiency monolithic amplifiers.
