Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to produce better summaries than are available with current strategies. To achieve this, a novel approach (called Argumentative Zoning) finds readily identifiable rhetorical relations in text, and combines this information with citation information. The approact been shown to produce output which is more useful than the predominant type of summaries, but it has only been applied to a limited range of The work proposed here focuses on two tasks: A) on extending the application of methods of identifying rhetorical relations to a wider range of, and B) on using rhetorical information to guide the choice of citation information to be shown to a user, thus leading to better citation indexes. T will concentrate on the application of machine learning methods, given a corpus sample of human-annotated text. Evaluation will be both intrins comparing the system's annotation with human annotation) and extrinsic (by measuring how the system output helps users to achieve better performance on an information seeking task).
