Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research considers trans-dimensional Markov chains that may be used within Bayesian and classical statistical frameworks, to discriminate between many different competing models. Motivation for the research comes from the field of ecology, where models represent competing biological hypotheses, each telling us something different about the underlying dynamics of the system. Thus, discriminating between (perhaps enormous numbers of) competing models may provides insight into the population under study. With large numbers of possible models, it becomes increasingly important to implement the trans-dimensional algorithms efficiently. Particular ecological applications will be considered motivating methodological advances which will have far reaching effects on a wide range of statistical areas.
