Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objective of this project is to develop self-consistent fully nonlinear models for the multiple mode phenomena that are observed in fusion tokamak plasmas, with a particular focus on the interaction between fusion alpha-particles and collective modes supported by the bulk plasma. I will analyse experimental data from the START, JET, COMPASS and MAST tokamaks to characterise excitation modes and their growth and decay rates, extract Lyapunov exponents and identify quantities accessible to experimental and computational study. I will then use my code to compute quantities that can be directly compared with experiment.I will parallelise my existing code to handle large enough systems for the interaction between modes to be possible. I also propose to reduce computational cost by identifying modifications to the model which will eliminate wave-particle interactions and modes which are known in advance to have negligible effect. The results from the numerical simulations will be used to test the accuracy of the assumptions behind the existing quasilinear theory. I will also study the effect of multiple modes on chirping.
