The urgent need for sustainable structures is the driving force behind a growing international interest in the use of FRPs in infrastructure applications. These materials are light-weight, strong and, for the most part, durable. However, the majority of work concerned with FRP durability has considered either a particular mechanical loading regime or a particular environmental exposure condition. Thus, the possible interaction between mechanical and environmental effects has not been quantified. This is a distinct limitation in our understanding and further insight into combined effects are essential for applications such as CFRP prestressed concrete wind turbine masts where the masts are subjected to severe fatigue loadings in aggressive offshore environments. The proposed collaboration with Professor Rizkalla at NC State University represents an enviable opportunity to undertake an experimental investigation of the behaviour of concrete prestressed with CFRP tendons under combined mechanical and environmental loading. The laboratory facilities at NC State are unique in providing the capability to undertake these complex experiments. The outcomes of this work are essential to confirm the long-term durability of CFRP solutions and the results will be of great importance in a vast range of infrastructure applications.
