Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research concerns gravity currents or intrusions produced when a constant volume of dense fluid is rapidly fed into a stratified ambient. Attention will be focused on novel patterns of behaviour which are expected to appear in an axisymmetric geometry, mainly including rotation of the system (Coriolis-centrifu effects), for large Reynolds numbers. We shall focus on obtaining predictions of the flow field by means of the shallow-water approximation and numerical Navier -Stokes simulations, and we will also provide insightful physical interpretation of the results. (The study will be backed by results of experiments wh we have already obtained consent to perform at the Large Rotating Platform Lab in Grenoble, France, not covered by the requested funds). The results of this basic research will be published in journal papers and presented at conferences, and are expected to provide knowledge and confidence applicable to industr mixing processes and environmental problems.
