Summary on Grant Application Form |
Dr.Maxion, Director of the camegie Mellon University Dependable System Laboratory, will visit the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne (NCL) for a period of one year. Dr Maxion's expertise lies in automated anormaly and fault detection and diagnosis, and has recently been applied with great sucess to design and evaluation of intrusion detection systems for use in information warfare and critical infrastructure protection. During his visit, Dr.Maxion will work closely with NCL academic staff and research students to develope new avenues for deploying anormaly detection in diverse areas (e.g,medical and financial data fraud), as well as to infuse current NCL projects with the latest advances derived from on going research in the Dependable Systems Laboratory at Camergie Mellon University (CMU). Dr.Maxion will engage in collaborations that will provide research advances both to NCL and CMU in the areas of (1) evaluation methods for anormaly-detection systems; (2) quantifiable diversity as an pproach to improved detection coverage of anormaly spaces; and (3) metrices and measures for characterizing data sets against which anormaly-detection techniques are to be deployed. It is anticipated thar several research articles/reports will result from the visit, as well as a substantial portion of a new book on building dependable systems.
