Our main objective is to develop theory and models which account for experimentally observed phenomena on decision making, based upon mathematical foundations. This is a timely and international hotly pursued topic. We expect that our approach will reveal principles that underlie simple decision making, including discrimination tasks performed by a cortical neuron system and motor control by a motor system. By applying nonlinear dynamics theory, variational calculus and statistical theory (decision theory, extrame value theory) to neuronal models we expect to understand how to improve decision making. By applying stochastic control theory, we want to implement a biological control system. On the other hand, our approach would opne up many new and challenging problems in mathematics including analytically solving the optimal control problem using the variational calculus, establishing a biological control theory of movement, developing a decision theory based upon biologically observed phenomena, developing a novel learning rule to improve the discrimination capacity, studying the stability and convergence of such a learning rule and so on.
