To explore areas in which we believe that detailed atomistic surface science may profitably be deployed to answer questions of real-world significance. 1. The understanding attainable through modern surface science techniques is likely to prove increasingly important in the development of future catalytic technology. We aim to focus on the rational design of better catalysts, based upon the principles elucidated by rigorous theory and experiment.2. To progressively incorporate two other key fields in which we believe modern surface science techniques can make a critical contribution.(a) Atmospheric science, to attempt to provide insight into the fundamental processes occurring when small pollutant molecules, including halogenated compounds, adsorb and react on the surface of ice particles in the troposphere and stratosphere. (b) Complex organic and biological adsorbates, to attempt to determine the behaviour of model peptides, amino acids and other important classes of molecule, and investigating possibilities for molecular recognition at surfaces.
