Summary on Grant Application Form |
There are many physical contexts where it is required to know how a wave is scattered by a large array of objects. For example, a recent proposal has been made in Japan to build a floating airport supported by many thousands of cylindrical columns. In the field of acoustics, applications include acoustic filters, noise control, and the design of phased-array antennas. The fundamental aim of CML's proposed visit to Colorado School of Mines is the development, with Professor Paul Martin, of a mixture of numerical and analytical techniques which can be used to investigate wave interaction with semi-infinite arrays, with particular emphasis on applications in waterwaves and acoustics. Scattering by a semi-infinite array is a problem of considerable interest from both a practical and a theoretical point of view since it allows the characterization of the pure edge effects in array scattering. Very few results are available. Some results have been derived previously for the case of small, widely-spaced, circular cylinders and we propose to extend previous work to develop methods which are valid for arbitrarily-sized, arbitrarily-shaped, cylinders and all frequencies.
