Summary on Grant Application Form |
The use of RTM & RFI for primary structures is a relatively new departure for fixed-wing aircraft mainframes, but their safe deployment and their support on flight critical primary structures remains a concern. The costs and timescales, associated with a pure empirical approach to aspects such as processing, strength, impact, repair, defects, durability, fatigue etc. of infused technologies, are deemed untenable and hence an alternative approach is required. It is estimated that analytical predictions, suitably validated, can result in 40-50% design cost savings and time-to-market.The ADACS DARP offers a partnership of industry with common challenges and academia with complimentary predictive composite research capabilities. Industry will provide a strong composite end user / supplier focus and contribution via. BAE Systems, Airbus UK, DOWTY Propellers and Hexcel. Academia will provide the necessary predictive and test capabilities via. Imperial College, Cranfield and Bristol University. The principal activities in this proposal will comprise of industry undertaking & providing coupon, element, sub-component and component process and test data for particular development applications (ie. Aero-foil sub-structure, skins and blades) and academia undertaking the development of generic but relevant predictive methods and tools.
