The RF modulator is one of the most important components in modern DWDM and OTDM systems which determines the operating frequency and the bandwidth of the system. Its complex nature originates from coupling of two different types of components - optical and microwave and from their nonlinear interaction. Although the principle of operation of modulators are well understood, problems arise in their practical design and implementation. If higher bandwidths and frequencies are to be achieved the problems associated with the RF modulators need to be solved. To date, a modelling tool that would offer simultaneous modelling of optical and microwave parts of these devices has not been developed. The grant proposes to establish main principles in developing a hybrid method that couples flexible numerical time-domain method with a more specialised frequency domain method. Moreover, accurate modelling of the non-linear phenomena using the Transmission Line Modelling (TLM) method will be developed. Although, the method will be developed for a particular modulator structure, the principles would be applicable to many complex systems. The method developed would enable other important issues to be tackled such as packaging and EMC. The project will maintain close link with industry (Bookham Technology and Corning Research Labs) so that findings coming out of the project can be immediately exploited.
