In this proposal we will detail studies which define a new, 'greener direction for asymmetric organic synthesis. We aim to develop the first simple, recyclable, supported chiral organocatalysts and to illustrate their potential in the asymmetric synthesis of (3-lactam and [3-lactone heterocycles, using the concept of'asymmetric catch-release'. The processes we will discuss involve the conversion of inexpensive, readily available precursors, such as ketones, aldehydes, acid chlorides and imines, into complex, heterocyclic systems in an asymmetric fashion. The products formed are important, 'high-cost', chiral building blocks used widely in the pharmaceutical industry and in academia, and are also important biological structures in their own right. The work will lead to efficient processes which are atom economical, use recyclable asymmetric catalysts, operate with innocuous raw materials and solvents, and generate very little waste.
