Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal addresses the research issues associated with the implementation and exploitation of permanent magnet linear actuators in nextgeneration electro-mechanical valve actuation systems for internal combustion engines. The research programme includes a detailed investigation of their performance (particularly with regard the influence of the wide operating temperature range encountered in service) using of both system-level simulations and experimental measurements on prototypes actuators operating under representative conditions in a custom test-rig that will be developed during the research programme. In order to extract maximum performance from the actuator and enhance their functionality advanced control strategies will be developed, implemented and evaluated using a combination of system simulations and prototype systems. Finally, the scope for realising variable valve-lift operation will be investigated.
