The SuperSTEM team have two interlinked objectives: To develop instruments capable of ultra-high spatial resolution analysis (essentially of single atoms or atom columns) and to demonstrate, using these instruments, the solution of scientific problems of interest to both academics and industry. We are therefore proposing a set of postgraduate research projects which will address both these issues. In the six projects detailed here, one could be categorised as relating mainly to instrumental development while five are strongly related to the demonstration of useful results in the fields of materials science and bioscience. Four of the project studentships relate to this bid from Liverpool (the host institution for SuperSTEM) while two others appear on forms from Leeds and Glasgow. It is not absolutely clear how to enter four studentships on this form, but our intention is that their starts should be staggered, between 1.4.03 and 1.10.04
