Summary on Grant Application Form
The turnover of UK retailers is in the order of 200bn per annum, accounting for 11 % of UK GDP (EPSRC, 2002 ). Retailers spend around 7-8% of their income on the logistical activities required to keep their shops adequately supplied. The aims of this work is to improve UK quality of life through delivering better service to consumers at a reduced environmental impact to the population at large while helping UK businesses research, develop and exploit new systems and technologies for retail logistics, both in the UK market and abroad. The Network for Integrated Retail Logistics (NIRL) will achieve these aims by creating a focus for UK research, technology transfer, education and training in food and non-food retail logistics. This work will bring together the companies core to the supply chain, the manufacturers of goods, retailers and distributors, and the organisations that support them, in particular universities, trade associations and IT service providers.
