This application is to support a visit by Professor Adam Reeves, Northeastern University, to the applicant's laboratory. Reeves, along with Larry Arend (now at NASA Ames) carried out the first fully controlled, quantitative study of human surface colour perception using computer-generated stimuli. Reeves proposes spending appro.x. 20 weeks at UMIST during 2003-4. The aim of this visit is to investigate with the applicant a paradox in human surface-colour perception, in which judgements of surface colour seem almost perfect by one behavioural measure, judgement of origin, but imperfect (40-60% of what is possible) by another. Resolving this paradox is important in understanding the sensory and cognitive mechanisms underlying surface-colour perception and the phenomenon of colour constancy . Reeves would be able to make a significant contributing to a current EPSRC project grant on human surface-colour perception in natural scenes. He would also interact with several other academic staff in the department working on colour constancy (Professor Janus Kulikowski, Drs Jamie Kraft and John Gigg).
