The propulsive jet is a major component of the noise of an aircraft at take-off. Modifications to the nozzle lip like serrations or small 'tabs' have been shown to reduce jet noise. However, the development of such devices has been largely empirical relying on a series of experimental tests. In this project, we plan to develop a theory for jet noise, derived rigorously from the equations of motion, in which the refractive effects of the jet are described through a vector Green function. This Green function is a solution of the adjoint linearised Euler equations, and describes how the sound emitted from an acoustic source is modified by propagation through the time-mean, but spatially evolving, velocity and temperature distribution in the jet. The acoustic sources depend on the statistics of the turbulent fluctuations. We will determine these by using Computational Fluid Dynamics to investigate the turbulent jet flow, first through a Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) calculation, and subsequently refining our model using Large Eddy Simulation (LES).Our aim is to produce a validated model, which predicts jet noise within a reasonable calculation time, and enhances understanding of the noise source mechanisms and how they can be modified.
