With the technical advances and cost reduction of 2D and 3D digital imaging equipment, digital imaging technology is rapidly becoming one of the most effective way of collecting data and information. In computer graphics, many most recent developments have gravitated towards the handling of digital imaging data in graphics pipelines. However, these developments are yet to have a significant impact upon computer animation, which encompasses a wide range of graphics techniques and is often considered the crown jewel of computer graphics. The core of most mainstream animation pipelines is surface-based modelling and rendering. The main hypothesis to be tested in this project is whether it is technically feasible and advantageous to construct a computer animation pipeline based primarily on image-, point- and volume-based representations which are collectively referred to as discretely sampled object representations (DSORs). This research is intended to explore abstraction of discretely sampled datasets, and generality of true-3D representations in the context of computer graphics. By building a prototype animation pipeline, it will expose the strengths and weaknesses of volume graphics, and inspire new algorithmic solutions. It is experimental computer science research in nature, but with a clear scientific goal to drive a paradigm shift from surface graphics to volume graphics. The research will impact upon several areas of computer graphics and its applications.
