Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for funds to initiate research into the understanding of the relationships between the microstructures of natural and regenerated cellulosic materials using Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and molecular mechanics simulations. The project will be in collaboration with the Leeds Polymer IRC (Prof G R Davies) who is to provide access and technical expertise on the molecular dyanamics simulation. The experimental programme will mainly take place at the Manchester Materials Science Centre, with the addition of a new 830 nm laser system for the investigation of cellulosic materials. A postdoctoral research assistant is to be appointed to begin preliminary investigations into nanofibres of cellulose and their micromechanical properties before and after chemical treatment. Industrial collaboration and support is sought through ACORDIS (via the provision of samples and through the use of their industrial pilot plant) and Renishaw Pic who will supply the new laser and provide technical expertise on interfacing it with an existing spectrometer.
