The long term environmental stability of adhesive bonded aluminium structures used in aircraft manufacture is of considerable practical interest, particularly as 30 year old airframes become commonplace. The initial strength of such bonds is highly dependent on the nature of the aluminium oxide surface to which the adhesive layer is applied and because of this a number of etching and anodisation processes have been developed to grow oxides of defined structure. Water has a significant effect both on the adhesive and the oxide layer and free-standing films of adhesive and layers of exposed oxide have been extensively studied but this gives only indirect evidence of the degradation of the adhesive/aluminium oxide interface.The development of improved and more environmentally-friendly surface treatments depends on understanding these degradation mechanisms - and an understanding of these aspects requires a direct measurement of the rate of water ingress and in-situ monitoring of the state of the oxide layer underneath the adhesive (or primer) layer. The proposal is to develop and demonstrate the application of dielectric techniques for the characterisation and differentiation of water migration at the oxide interface and the in-situ monitoring of the oxide.
