Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal describes two projects which will be pursued in collaboration with Professor Martina Havenith from the University of Bochum, initially during the period of her Visiting Fellowship in the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry Laboratory at Oxford - and subsequently in both laboratories.Project 1 will explore the spectroscopy and force fields associated with the key, coupled low frequency torsional and bending modes in isolated and in solvated oligosaccharides - which control their conformational structures - first in the gas phase, using infra-red and stimulated Raman ion-dip spectroscopic techniques and then in aqueous solution using a far infrared, THz laser spectrometer system.Project 2 will build upon Professor Havenith's pioneering high resolution infrared spectroscopic study of the structure, dynamics and proton transfer rate in a model double hydrogen bonded system, the formic acid dimer, to include double hydrogen bonding to the amide group. The structure and proton transfer rates in two model dimers, (formic acid-formamide) and (formamide)2, will be characterised using microwave Fourier transform (FT-MW) and infrared spectroscopic methods, at Oxford and Bochum.
