Summary on Grant Application Form
The project is concerned with the development of novel rotaxane and catenane self-assembled monolayer anion sensors. Initially, the synthesis of new, redox-active, macrocycles and thread-like ion-pair components containing disulphide functional groups will be undertaken. The subsequent construction/ self-assembly of novel redox-active interlocked molecular architectures onto gold electrode surfaces will be achieved using anions as templatirg motifs. The resulting rotaxane and catenane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) will be characterised using a variety of electrochemical (including plasmon resonance) and scanning probe techniques. By virtue of their unique topological cavities, these rotaxane and catenane SAMs have the potential to exhibit unprecedented anion recognition and sensing properties.
