There is growing interest in so-called weak hydrogen bonds of the type C-H..X and X-H..pi because of their importance in crystal engineering, molecular recognition and supramolecular chemistry, as well as protein-ligand complexes and enzyme action in biological systems. These interactions are, by nature, weak and, therefore, difficult to detect. Advanced analytical methods capable of probing them are, thus, required. The overall aim of the proposed research is to demonstrate the suitability of solid-state NMR as a probe of weak hydrogen bonds. Solid-state NMR is a well-established pr of conventional hydrogen bonding and can provide information that is complementary to that available from other methods, e.g. crystallography. In particular, 1 H solid-state NMR can focus in on the most important part of a hydrogen bond, namely the proton. Specific aims include (i) the observation of J couplings across weak hydrogen bonds which would provide direct evidence for the presence of such a bond, (ii) the measurement of dipolar couplings between hydrogen-bonding partners in order to determine hydrogen-bonding distances and also investigate whether weak hydrogen bondi restricts the dynamics of, e.g., methyl groups, (iii) the quantification of the effect of weak hydrogen bonding on the 1 H chemical shift
