Summary on Grant Application Form
Partial discharges occur in high voltage plant as the result of some form of defect in the insulation. This defect may be benign, or it may be the precursor of a more serious problem for which remedial action should be taken. The occurence of partial discharges is accompanied by the release of radio frequency energy which takes the form of a short duration impulse. Recent research has shown that the origin of the source of the partial discharge can be located using a wideband, directly sampled, 4 element antenna array. This grant is to fund the purchase of a van which will be converted into a mobile monitoring laboratory allowing the 4 element antenna array to be mounted on the roof. This will allow further investigation into the sources of partial discharges on energised plant within high-voltage substations. A particular feature of the equipment will be the ability to move the array whilst it is monitoring. The grant will provide a greater understanding of partial discharge location and multi-path effects.
