Summary on Grant Application Form
When electromagnetic waves radiate from an object they leave behind part of the electromagnetic energy in the `near field' which remains closely tied to the object. Locked in the near field are all the finer sub-wavelength details of the electromagnetic activity, details which can never be reconstructed from the far field and which so far have largely been abandoned as inaccessible. It is the mission of this project to access those details, to control and manipulate them, and put them to practical use. To achieve this we shall need to develop a whole new class of electromagnetic materials and to create a theoretical framework for understanding the new phenomena.
