Summary on Grant Application Form
When electromagnetic waves radiate from an object they leave behind part of d electromagnetic energy in d 'near field' which remains closely the object. Locked in d near field are all the finer sub-wavelength details of the electromagnetic activity, details which can never be reconstructed far field and which so far have largely been abandoned as inaccessible. It is d mission of this project to access those details, to control and manipulate dm, and put dm to practical use. To achieve this we shall need to develop a whole new class of electromagnetic materials and to create theoretical framework for understanding d new phenomena.
