The proposed three year extension to the Advanced Fellowship will provide a valuable opportunity to extend my research in blood flow imaging and integrated optical sensors into other flow and vibration applications. Integrated optical sensors consist of arrays of photodiodes with on-chip processing that enable smart imaging of signals that cannot be detected using conventional CCDs. They offer the potential to develop detector arrays that are sensitive to frequency shifted light that is backscattered from moving objects. This will allow full field laser Doppler imaging that can be applied to imaging flows and vibrations in a wide range of applications.For the different applications, the same basic principles of developing imaging sensors to process laser Doppler measurements will be followed, but the specific electronic and optical design will be application dependent. The additiona research time provided by the extension will enable different sensor designs to be investigated and fabricated that will operate over a range of frequencies. Research will also be carried out into how the developed sensors can be implemented in optical imaging instruments for a range of applications. A significant amount of time will be spent developing specific knowledge of the different applications to ensure maximum scientific impact.
